ECONOMY ACTION GROUP – Goals and Milestones

The goals under the Economy theme are given below. Some of these have started operations, and some are yet to start.

Goal 1: Expand our in-kind economy to cover all basic needs
Goal 2: To foster a spirit of dedication and joyful karma yoga
Goal 3: Create new initiatives for wealth generation, including an incubation center.
Goal 4: Create and put in place a Statistics Office
Goal 5: Establish a 5-year financial plan for Auroville (2015-20) of recurring and capital expenses

The above goals are detailed out in the section below. Some goals that have been listed under the Economy Action Group need to be shifted to other Action groups, and do not form part of the Economy Action Group. As follows:

Tap into and use Auroville Human Resource potential, database on Auroville HR – this is being handled by Isha and Slava of RAS
Promesse and Service Farm to be developed as Phase 1 by 2018, as part of a larger goal of developing some of the outlying lands for income generation for Auroville. (Ethically and sustainably – land only to be leased – could be a joint venture). Propose larger plan – Shift to Land and Town Planning Action Group
Put a system in place that encourages transparency for all the sub goals – Shift to Governance Action Group, and ensure this goal is adhered to in all Action groups
Ensure mandates and guidelines of all groups, activities and projects are defined – Shift to Governance Action Group, and ensure this goal is adhered to in all Action groups


Goal 1: Expand our in-kind economy to cover all basic needs
Tentative team: Anandi, Pashi, Arjun, Toine, Sanjeev
Timeline:

Change the name from “Maintenance” to “Prosperity”
Delink Prosperity from specific work
Create a care economy that takes care of all different needs of Aurovilians. You take care of (serve) Auroville, and Auroville takes care of you

List of assets that we can all share
List of what are the different needs of Aurovilians.
Create a platform for these need requests, maybe online, where requests no longer go to a Review Group, but person fills in the requests online, and it is processed impersonal.
Come up with a proposal

Raise resources, where will resources come from? (ref. to Goal 3.)
Create a service unit and policy for collective procurement
Ensure 500 housing units / basic short-term accommodation are in place which are not funded by individuals but by other means for all those ready to commit and work for Auroville.

Goal 2: To foster a spirit of dedication and joyful karma yoga
Tentative team: Marc, Anandi, Nicole, Mandakini, Jean-Yves, Aurelio
Timeline:

Brainstorm and come up with a proposal
Spirit of serving and joy of service to the community
Cultivate an awareness that we are here to build the city
What is the socio economic relation of individuals in Auroville
Awareness and communication
Educate and help people to integrate their work with Auroville
A more caring society. Possibility and support to help people get over their addictions

Where everybody who is able to work at least 5 hours daily

Highlight inspiring stories and projects and community events. Link work with unending education
Foster social interaction to cater to a knowledge society and to foster trust; build interactive spaces and events. This needs a nice inspiring name

 


Goal 3: Create new initiatives for wealth generation, including an incubation center.
Team members: Uma, Gijs, Torkil, Marc, Aurelio, Petra, Dhanya, Daniel (Tanto), Chandresh
Timeline: July 2015 to March 2017

Put in place a functioning incubation centre, called the Integral Entrepreneurship Lab (IEL) to support new ventures
2. Matching funding (3% from 33% and 3% from all income generating units).
3. List of possible other donors
4. Forming a constituency group (to make proposals)
5. In-kind donation of knowledge
6. Reduce resistance from Units and Central Fund


Goal 4: Create and put in place a Statistics Office
Team members: Manoj, Harini, Devi, Vikram
Timeline: July 2015 to March 2017

 

Define role of the Statistics Office (done)
Source funds to support the functioning of the Office (ongoing)
Recruit a full time person knowledgeable in the field of statistics and data management. (ongoing)
Undertake a research to identify indicators that are relevant to monitor the manifestation of Auroville, collect the necessary data, compute the indicators and share them with the Community (yet to start)
Develop the necessary software for the above work, such as a repository of data that can be accessed across Auroville (yet to start)
Sub tasks are as follows:

Research quantitative and qualitative indicators for Auroville
Meet with stakeholders to identify indicators
Get data requirements for indicators – identify which data is needed for the Indicators and for Way Forward 2018
Map data needs with Working Groups
Design survey for data not available
Identify the team for data collection and orient them
Develop infrastructure for collecting and analysing data.
Initiate data collection
Identify errors and duplications in the data. Determine probable corrections to these records. Sanitize data received and upload.
Consolidate data, and compute indicators
Design a communication strategy and an online dashboard for the indicators
Publish the indicators and share with the Community
Set up a process wherein the above steps can be repeated with relative ease
